Those Who Love me, I Will Deliver

Scripture: “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11-12 NRSV
It was a bright, sunny day, but my attitude was anything but bright and sunny. I was driving north on Interstate 295 in southern New Jersey, on my way to a job that seemed to never give me anything but anxiety and stress. What new outrages and problems would be waiting when I finally drove through the gates of the oil refinery where I managed a large operation of laboratory technicians and chemists? I felt as if I were never able to put out the figurative fires of one day before the infernos of the next one started.
The highway was almost deserted that late morning. Suddenly a huge shadow crossed over the hood of my car, so strange and unexpected that I gasped. I turned to follow the direction of the shadow and was astonished to see a magnificent bald eagle, flying on the other side of the road and staying parallel to my car.
Yes, we were near the Delaware River, and I had heard reports that bald eagles were nesting somewhere in the area, but who would expect to see one, in full flight and that close, at 11 am in the morning?
And who could ever, when confronted by the majesty and size of such a creature, fail to be jolted out of depression into awe at the majesty of the God in whose creation the eagle flies?
Soon the eagle turned and flew off in the direction of the river. But I will never lose the feeling of having been borne up out of the trials of the moment into the watchfulness of God who will never leave me alone in despair.
Prayer: Lord God, we rejoice in the assurance that you will fly beside us as we travel through life, and that you will bear us up through all of life’s trials. In Jesus’ name, Amen
